Peak Oil refers to the stage in human development where the demand for oil (and fossil fuels) starts to exceed supply. Although oil and fossil fuels will not run out it has been stated that these once common resources will become harder to mine and extract. Fossil fuels are employed in everything from transport to agriculture. In Cuba it was observed that one of the first casualties from their reliance on oil from the former Soviet Union was agriculture which depends on pesticides and fertiliser based on petro-chemical products.

Is it alarmist to describe "Peak Oil" as "the end of civilisation as we know it ?" Some appear to believe that it is. This video is from YouTube and expresses an alarmist perspective.
